It’s a very nice device this whole 3D printer but somehow every time I see it I get the feeling that designing and building the printer is nicer than what you can actually do with it. If I check thingiverse all I see are crudely printed iPhone stands and giftshop items.
Is this a lack of creativity and skill of the people using this device or does the printer need some more development to become better quality so it can actually print objects with high enough mechanical strength and dimensional accuracy for them to be used in ‘real’ products?

Check out Shapeways to see what people are doing with high-resolution printers. There are some really strong materials available now. Maybe the creativity is there but the desktop 3d printer has to catch up and so do 3d design skills to make a file that will actually print. The design software could be vastly improved.
