   Seriously, there is one thing the article falls short: Which kind of microscope to buy if you don’t need a BRAND NEW one.

   For the same money the MAKE shed sells you new ones you can get a used ZEISS Standard 18 fully fitted if you’re a bit lucky. The good thing about older ZEISS scopes is that they a) never ever brake and b) can be expanded by various modules to fit EVERY possible need. There is an enourmous amount of stuff that fits on this particular scope, it’s awesome. If you take good care of them, they WILL last a lifetime and not loose much of it’s value.

   I do own a ZEISS Standard. It’s 30 some years old and surely one of the more elegant and timeless pieces of fine engineering built. Do the

   I use one of these guys for jewelry work (hand engraving and setting itty bitty stones):

   It’s a really nice zoom scope that has a good working distance- it would be killer for electronics work too as you would have room to move a soldering iron around under it.
