Dear Ladyada (Limor), Thank you soooo much for signing my autograph book. I know you were busy and had lots of things to do, but you still gave me some time! Thank you!! You are so amazing for all the cool electronic and crafty stuff you work on. It’s hard to find other girls who like electronics and robots and stuff anywhere, but your stuff helps me and dad says you’re a great role model. We bought your motor shield and the wave shield for our little robot. I helped solder both of them and maybe soon we’ll have our little bot rolling and talking!

Kids these days are pretty lucky.
My childhood electronics was limited to expensive Heathkit products and Radio Shack xxx in 1 kits. You could buy a Timex/Sinclair and build it up, but I didn’t have that kind of jack either.
Lots of cool kits have sprung up in the last few years.
I bought my oldest daughter a Velleman Heart kit for her birtday. We’re going to assemble it this weekend. Looking forward to it.
Places like Adafruit will give me a source of well documented kits should she wish to continue building stuff.
As an aside, my daughter loved tearing apart one of my old computers a few years ago. A screw driver and hours of discovery ensued. If you’re going to pitch an old PC, let your kits have a bit of fun first!

Limor, Evil Mad Scientists, et al, thanks for bringing the Heathkit experience back to life. Slinging solder, making smoke (hopefully not chip smoke) and seeing results is great fun.

That is so awesome! I’m a professional jeweler and I remember one time we had a group of Girl Scouts come by and watch us work and to experience the fascination they had was amazing.

Not just little girls (though that’s incredibly heart-warming). I’m going into my 3rd year of computer engineering (which is basically just EE with a focus on computers). And you’ve really been a role model for me from the start.
