Send a message…

I made another little demo of an XPort Direct webserver tonight. This time, you can send me a short message and it will be photographed and put up on flickr.

Basically, an Arduino + XPort shield + XPort + LCD + some code = minitwitter. I’ll put up deets on how to DIY later tomorrow.
But you can try it out now!

Edit: I added a servo that moves when a message is sent, so that the (motion-sensitive) camera will take a picture after each update. whew!

  1. Very cool! I’m interested in the photo uploading. Does the arduino/xport take care of that too? Or is it just at camera on a timer? (Judging by the duplicate photos on the flickr page)

  2. its just a 3 minute camera timer. i couldnt find an easily controllable iSight program and didnt want to learn applescript at like, 2am 🙂

  3. Very awesome!! I look forward to seeing the code! How long before the spam bots pick it up? 😛

  4. This is brillant! I just can’t wait of doing a stupid project with the XPort 😀

  5. very, very nice….!

  6. is it possible to use this with a T6963C Graphic LCD ??

  7. This is so cool I almost can’t believe it works! I’ve been wanting to try a networked project and this looks like the perfect setup. Just curious: any plans for a Matchport shield any time soon? Or, maybe even better, a tutorial on how you designed/built the XPort shield?

  8. What type of camera are you using? because if you attached the lcd to something to some it couldn’t mean and then used a webcam and setup the focus and alignment properly you could have some very nice looking photos (some of them appear to be out of focus and a tad hard to see).

  9. hmm i don’t know which photo i was looking at but all the ones in the flickr seem to fine focus wise and the aligment.

  10. Very cool. What kind of camera is motion sensitive?

  11. Hi, this is really a neat experiment 😀 Thanks for sharing!
Just one note, somehow it put up 3 pictures of the same message, don’t know if it was a submit problem or a issue with the motion detecting camera, but i swear i clicked just one time on the submit button 🙂

  12. this is just an isight. theres lots of motion-sensitive software for it. but it also means that if the cat or me bump the table (its my desktop) it takes an extra photo. heh

  13. @Brian: I thought the stuff shes posted already clearly explains how the board works. It’s got holes for two different models of XPorts that go to some holes for wiring up to the users choice, and an additional 3.3v regulator because the adaptor takes alot of power. A matchport shield would be trickier, need a spot for the matchport and for the “PHY” which I’m assuming the isolation transformers and the jack. The jack etc would only be populated for people using the ethernet…

Datasheets are your friends, even if some of them are cruel and harsh mistresses

  14. @Kyle: You’re right, of course. Once again I stick foot in mouth before fully R’ingTFM! 🙂

  15. Did you ever write up the DIY on this project? I cant find it and the link (http://www.ladyada.net/make/eshield/netwriter.html) is dead. Thanks!

    Regards,

    John

  16. sadly, i have to write it up. i also have to fix a bunch of xport shield bugs. oof 🙁

  17. Also wanted to bug you about the DIY status or a look at your code. I would love to recreate this, and this newbie needs a lot of help. Many thanks.
